Health Insurance Marketplace

Explore plan options to make the right decision for you and your family

What is the Health Insurance Marketplace?

The Health Insurance Marketplace, sometimes called the “Exchange”, opened for business on October 1, 2013. The Marketplace is a website where individuals and small businesses can shop for and buy affordable and qualified health coverage.  This one-stop-shop allows you to view health plans, get answers to your questions, determine eligibility for lower out-of-pocket costs, and enroll in a health plan.

You are able to view side-by-side comparisons of each health plan’s costs, quality and benefits, making it simple to purchase the best plan for you and your family.

Health Plan Coverage Categories

Marketplace plans are categorized into “tiers” or “levels” of Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.  The levels are based on the percentage the plan pays for the average overall cost of providing essential health benefits to its members. The plan you choose will affect the annual dollar amount you spend for healthcare benefits throughout the year.

All plans include the same standard benefits (free preventative care, no denial based on pre-existing conditions); the difference is how much you pay per month and how much you pay when you receive healthcare services.

For example, if you purchase a Bronze plan, you are likely to pay a lower premium, but your costs will be higher when you receive care. If you choose a Platinum plan, you are likely to pay a higher premium, but will have the lowest out-of-pocket costs when you get care.

To be Eligible for the Marketplace you:

  • Must live in the United States;
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national; and
  • Cannot be currently incarcerated
