Health Care Reform laws can be confusing; Total Health Care is here to help!
What is Health Care Reform
Health Care Reform, also known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA or just ACA) or “Obamacare”, was passed into law in 2010 and is designed to improve the accessibility and affordability of health care. It gives millions of individuals with too little or no health coverage, access to health plans at different cost levels. The law includes the individual mandate, which requires all U.S. citizens and legal residents to have health coverage or pay a tax penalty.
Key Dates
The Marketplace has a set time frame for you to purchase health coverage, called an open enrollment period. Annual open enrollment for 2019 health coverage runs from November 1,2020 – December 15, 2020.
For your coverage to be effective January 1, 2021, you must complete you enrollment application by December 15, 2020. After the open enrollment period ends, you will not be able to buy a plan through the Marketplaces (unless you have a qualifying life event) until the next annual open enrollment period.
